My daughter was called a c--- the other day in school. She had not done anything but ask him a fairly innocuous question. She and the boy in question are both in 11th grade. He was only given a detention for this. I think more drastic action should have taken place, especially since this boy has done such things before. What is the "normal" consequence for this in high schools today?

I am applying to college and am having great difficulty with composing an essay. Exposing my essence in 500 words or less seems to be an impossible task. Writing is my strongest point but I have the tendency to do it in a big way (i.e., giving a nine page essay for a two page assignment). I have written an essay that I think is wonderful. It started out 1000 words and I have been able to cut it down to a little over 800. I don't like I can cut anything else out with gutting the sweet meat. How strict is the letter restriction of 400-500 (I'm applying to NYU early decision)? Will going over it make the admissions officers feel disrespected and like I'm an arrogant kid who doesn't follow rules? Or might they fail to notice? This gives me great anxiety, the ED deadline is fast approaching. Any advice?

I am in seventh grade, but I definitely want to get into an Ivy League college, as my cousins have gone to Harvard and other Ivy League colleges. I am taking all Honors classes and am planning to take as many APs as I can, but do you have any other advice? I could use all the help I can get and I want to get an early start on these things.
